About the Laboratory

The Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory has been built deep underground, in a working gold mine in the town of Stawell, Victoria.
With the development funded by both state and federal governments, a team of scientists and engineers have built an underground laboratory in the search to discover the elusive nature of dark matter, one kilometre underground in the Stawell gold mine.
This is a dawn of a new era for this regional town and the next, significant, step in the ground-breaking international collaboration amongst leading physicists working on the SABRE project.

About the Science

Despite dark matter composing most of our universe, its nature remains unknown. SABRE (Sodium Iodide with Active Background Rejection Experiment) aims to directly detect dark matter particles.
The SABRE experiment relies on two similar detectors: one, already in operation, is located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), in Italy.
The second detector will be built deep underground, within the Stawell gold mine, which is the first facility of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
